Purpose
The goal of this assignment is for each student to demonstrate their ability to construct a persuasive argument based on their own logical reasoning and supporting their points with scholarly research. Students will be able to use the writing techniques that they evaluated in the rhetorical analysis unit in order to make their argument and refutation (counter-argument) both detailed and successful. The reading, resources, and assignments throughout unit four will assist you in developing this argumentative essay.
Writing Instructions
In this assignment, each student will construct an argumentative essay with support from at least 3 scholarly sources (from the TSTC library databases). This fnal research essay should have at least 6 well-written paragraphs (introduction, 3+ body paragraphs, 1+ refutation, and conclusion) and will require each student to revise according to self review assignment in order to submit an argument essay of at least 1,250 words (approximately 4 pages) that closely argues for or against a debatable topic.
Remember, in academic essays, do not use contractions or or the personal pronouns: you, your, our, we, us. Also, since this is not a personal narrative essay, 3rd person-pronouns should generally be used.
Each essay needs an introduction to the topic and the various sides or positions as well as a clear thesis statement (5+ sentences); body paragraphs that provide argumentative support for the essay’s thesis (what the essay claims or argues about the topic); a refutation paragraph that proves the opposing argument to be invalid, incorrect, or false; and a conclusion of 5+ well-written sentences (body and refutation paragraphs will need to be at least 8-12 sentences to meet length requirements).
Each essay is required to correctly utilize MLA formatting and citation guidelines with direct quotes or paraphrases from at least 3 scholarly sources in the body paragraphs or refutation only (at least 1 quote or paraphrase per paragraph). Paraphrases and quotations should ft within the frame and context of the paragraph and be properly cited; quotes should also be introduced with a lead-in phrase. Scholarly support (quotations or paraphrases) should not appear in the introduction or conclusion paragraphs.
Each essay should adhere to the following requirements:
- Introduction: introduces the general topic, narrows into the specifc debate, explains various sides or positions; clearly ends by stating an arguable claim/thesis without using any direct paraphrases or quotes from any sources.
- Body & Organization: 3+ paragraphs that give clear and accurate supporting claims by explaining the details of each main point and offering logical, supportive reasoning and examples in each paragraph; one main point or focused area of the thesis should be addressed in each body paragraph; Paragraphs are constructed in a logical manner and adhere to standards of paragraph structure with topic, supporting detail, and concluding sentences.
- Refutation: counter-argument or refutation paragraph discusses the reasons that some people may argue against the overall argument or supporting claim (essay’s thesis) and explains the reasons that the thesis is still valid by disproving the opposing points, using scholarly support.
- Conclusion: restates/rewords thesis, summarizes points, proposes a solution, course of action, a new way to approach the topic, or global concerns related to the topic without using any direct paraphrases or quotes from any sources.
- Citations: The citations for scholarly support are correctly formatted on a Work Cited (MLA) page and used appropriately throughout the body paragraphs and refutation to support the argument with at least 4 direct quotes or paraphrases and a total of at least 3 scholarly sources; direct quotes are smoothly integrated into the paragraphs with lead-in phrases and both paraphrases and quotations end in a correct MLA in-text citation.
- Formatting: 1,250+ words (approximately 4 pages) that are appropriately formatted in either MLA (Times New Roman, 12-point font, black ink, and double-spaced without extra spacing) with recurring header and pagination, required heading, and a creative title.
- Grammar, Mechanics, & Style: Sentences are clear, complete, and of varying lengths; correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation, with very few or no errors and an appropriate tone with use of academic language and vocabulary.
