Why Read Literature?

In today’s fast-paced, media-saturated society, reading literature may strike some as a strange activity. Reading literature generally requires a quiet environment and an investment of some time. Whatever pleasures it offers are not immediate (especially compared with TV, movies, computer games, Internet, etc.). With these thoughts in mind, why do we bother to read literature at all? What benefits can we get from reading literature that, perhaps, we cannot anywhere else?
