Weekly Guest Speaker

Students will have the opportunity to meet with and learn from guest speakers; these individuals are experts in their fields, who cultivated multiple years of experience and have critical understandings and perspectives into their profession, community needs, assets and service. Students should be prepared to ask thoughtful questions and engage with speakers. Following these talks, a short reflexive essay (300-500 words) for each speaker. These short papers are not meant to be opinion pieces expressing personal feelings about the speaker; nor should they be a summary of the presentation and/or conversation. As a social scientist, you must critically engage with speakers’ ideas, advice, evidence and assumptions. Therefore, each reflexive essay will incorporate a critical assessment of information covered, how it adds or challenges what was previously covered in class, and the personal and professional implications such assessments have on service learning and community engagement.
