Discussion Assignment

Please number your responses to correspond with the questions below. Thank you.

1. Section 6.1b discusses certainty, risk, uncertainty, and ambiguity. Describe two situations (not from the book, please) that demonstrate the difference between risk and uncertainty. In your description, define both terms in your own works. Be sure to understand the concepts. Please don’t copy from elsewhere. While that is tempting, it won’t help you develop the concepts yourself

2. Watch the Ted Talk video titled “Dare to Disagree” given my Margaret Heffernan(https://www.ted.com/talks/margaret_heffernan_dare_to_disagree?language=en). At the beginning of the talk, she discusses Alice Stewart and her research. What Alice discovered was significant, so much so that many lives could have been saved but her research was not accepted. Review Section 6.5 Why do Managers Make Bad Decisions?. Which of the causes listed do you believe led the medical community to not accept Alice’s findings for so long? There can be more than one reason, but you don’t have to write on all. Write about what you feel most confident about. Please explain the concept in your own words and why you believe it is related to the situation.

3. Still focusing on Margaret Heffernan’s Ted Talk, think about her relationship with George and Section 6.6 Innovative Decision Making. Which of the techniques described in the book best describes their relationship to ensure Alice was correct and ready for her fights in the scientific world?

4. Let’s go back to the article “Black Diamond cuts 70 positions and transitions manufacturing out of Utah”. At the beginning of Section 6.1 Types of Decisions and Problems, the authors define decision making as a “process of identifying problems and opportunities and then resolving them.” What problem or opportunity is Black Diamond trying to resolve?

5. Staying with the Black Diamond article, how did leadership go about deciding on what to do to resolve the problem or pursue the company’s new strategy?
