The Genre Analysis Assignment

The Genre Analysis assignment requires you to gather several examples of one type of genre (e.g. lab report, business plan, brochure, flyer, business letter, professional email, etc.) and compare across each example for the conventions that define that specific genre. In the workplace, you will be required to write in several different genres. It is important that you are able to recognize the conventions of the genre in which you are working and make the appropriate rhetorical choices to communicate your message while addressing reader-user expectations.

To complete the Genre Analysis assignment, first, collect 3-5 artifacts (representative samples) of the genre you’ve selected. Again, each example should be from the same type of genre.

Next, use the Analyzing Genres document (below) to investigate and interpret patterns across artifacts. What similarities in structure, word choice, social expectations, and other features do you notice?

The final step is to write a brief (100-150) synopsis of your findings. As a writer, what do you need to know to be able to write effectively in this genre? What will reader-users expect from this genre?

The deliverables for this assignment are 1) Your responses to the Analyzing Genres document, 2) Your synopsis, and 3) The artifacts you collect (submitted as either link and/or file uploads.

Note: When considering the language most commonly used, this does not refer to English, French, Spanish, etc. Instead, look for keywords, key phrases, and/or patterns of speech commonly used across your artifacts.
