TRAFFIC ENGINEERING
Assignment #5
University Avenue is an arterial connecting two regional centers of a large metropolitan area. A signal progression study is to be undertaken for eight intersections starting from the one with University and Snelling. The signal cycle lengths are all 60 sec with a uniform green split of 60/40% favoring the University Avenue. The speed limit is 30 mph. Draw a time-space diagram by adopting horizontal scale 1″ = 600′ for distance and vertical scale of 1″ = 40 sec of time.
- Is there a green bandwidth for moving through all the intersections in each traffic direction with the initial Offsets shown below?
To improve the signal coordination, you need to develop a balanced progressive signal control plan. If the same cycle length, green splits, and speed limit are to be maintained, calculate and draw a new time-space diagram based on the results of the balanced progressive plan with the center of the green interval at Snelling adopted as the bench-mark.
- What is the maximum bandwidth in BOTH traffic directions after the improvement?
- Mark the reference line and show the new offsets as a result of the signal progression improvement. Show the green time and red time at each intersection based on the new offsets and draw the green band in both directions. (Note: it is OK to draw the green band only for a couple of cycles and for a few intersections if you do not have more time to draw the entire picture.)
