Olmstead v. United States was a supreme court case in the 1920s when alcohol was illegal. In this case a private phone was wire tapped and eventually an illegal, at the time, alcohol organization was caught. The supreme court ruled that the place was protected, not the person resulting in the 4thamendment not protecting Olmstead. Another supreme court case involving the 4th amendment was Katz v. United States a few decades later. This case delt with a public phone being wire tapped and Katz being caught illegally gambling. This case overturned the results from Olmstead because it was that the person was protected under the 4th amendment not the place. This reversal in the supreme court can be seen as a result of newer technologies. After Katz it came to light that with newer technologies there would need to be more protection regarding the 4th amendment. Throughout the years the right to privacy has become a commodity and most people just expect the constitution to uphold that privacy.

I find it interesting that a man being recorded in his own home does not qualify under the 4th amendment but someone using a public phone in a public space does. It goes to show how opinions on certain matters change over time and that society is okay with these said changes.
