Activity – Google Slides

Learning Goal: I’m working on a education & teaching writing question and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.

For this assignment, you will create a presentation using a Google tool, specifically Google Slides. I recommend that you connect your Google Slide presentation to your Standards and Objectives assignment, but feel free to create a presentation that matches any of your discipline content. Your presentation typically supports teacher-directed methodology (i.e. lecture, guided notes, etc.). For instance in Biology, I might create a 15 slide presentation that delivers Diffusion and Osmosis information.

Google Slides is an online presentation application that allows for the creation, editing, and sharing of presentations. Google Slides is much like PowerPoint (PC) or Keynote (Mac). Remember you can use this presentation tool in a face-to-face class, a synchronous session such as Zoom, or for an asynchronous presentation.

Please follow the tutorial on how to create and share your Google Slide.

On a side note, Google Slides can be used for more than just presentations. Google Slides has some really neat templates that have been pre-created for others to use in very inventive ways, such as Fakebook. TheFakebook template is a Facebook replica that could be used as a student-led project, it can be found at https://drive.google.com/previewtemplate?id=17TT48ImF0fZFtawIvh0G2r8YcNOBfkkWDoEDARTOuWk&mode=public

and another example of it in use can be found at http://edtechpicks.org/2014/01/fakebook-create-fake-facebook-wa/ (Links to an external site.)

Part #1 – Google Slide Presentation

Your Google Slides presentation should be a resource that could be used alongside your lesson plan (see Module #3 Assignment). If you have chosen to work with someone else on the lesson plan development, then you can work together on this assignment as well. Google Slides allows for multiple people to access the presentation and collaborate on the same presentation at the same time, depending on the settings the owner establishes. If it is easier for you, you can also create your presentation in Keynote (Mac) or PowerPoint (PC) and import them into a Google Slide presentation. I imported the PowerPoint from the instructional video for this module and you can access it at https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1ryxRXgFrfa8piC9DKGND5N34uYOxMtrJbVhqzjoU5m0/edit?usp=sharing (Links to an external site.)

When creating your Google Slide, please keep some simple things in mind to help make your presentation an asset vs a distraction to your lesson. Death by PowerPoint is a presentation by Don McMillan and can be viewed at the following link:

Please refer to the tutorial within our course module on how to access, create, and share a Google Slides presentation. You will need to copy, paste, and hyperlink your Google Slides presentation and share with us how you plan to use it with your lesson. Your presentation will need to support your lesson plan topic (and it may need to be adjusted after you write and edit your lesson plan). The ‘Notes’ section should be completed when content is not clear on the slide, especially if you are using the blank or black slide strategy to reinforce focus as found in our article. I would advise that there should be at least 5 slides with notes. See here for support:

Part #2 – Purpose and Need

Narrative Alert! After you hyperlink your presentation to the Canvas assignment submission link, you will need to write about how you would use your presentation.

  • How and why will my Google Slide presentation be relevant to students? Briefly discuss the content addressed and its relationship to student knowledge and skill development. Discuss the pedagogy of presentations and student retention.
  • Will your Google Slide presentation be delivered on an interactive board?
  • How will the students interact with the Google Slide presentation? Will it be used for guided notes? Will it be used as a reference for you?
  • There should be at least one reference to our text, course videos, and as needed, additional researched resources.

*APA Format Example:

  • In-line Citation: (Orlich et al., 2012, p. 15);
  • Reference: Orlich, D. C., Harder, R. J., Trevisan, M. S., Brown, A. H. & Miller, D. (2018). Teaching strategies: A guide to effective instruction. Cengage Learning.
