In our study of the brain so far this semester we have considered some attractive features of its functions. These include an ability to revise our understanding of the world around us on the basis of new information, the capacity for rational thought and decision making, and the ability to understand the emotions of others as well as our own. Taken together, these present a quite positive picture of the potential of human beings. And yet, as we know, human history gives evidence of human behaviour that is not easily explained by this positive picture of human potential. As a basis for your understanding of this problem you must have read the article that was assigned for week 7, The tragic success of Nazi propaganda. It is posted in the Learning Content. This evaluation requires that you write a paper that considers this problem from a psychological perspective. In your paper ensure that you include a discussion of what we have learned about the brain, particularly the social brain, that is relevant to this issue. I have also posted one additional paper and one addition video to Learning content which some students may find helpful and utilize in their paper. Unlike the paper identified above, it is not required that you use these materials. They are meant to be an additional resource for those students who wish to use them. The paper is labeled A theory of Stupidity, and the video How did ordinary citizens become murderers. Please be aware, you must not use sources from outside those provided in the course. You may use any of the course materials provided since the beginning of the semester. These include lectures, slides and any videos or articles posted in Learning Content. Also remember that while it is acceptable to use direct quotes from these sources in your paper where that is appropriate, if you do that, you must cite the source. The purpose of this evaluation is to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of course materials as well as an ability to think in an intelligent and integrative way about them. Strive to write clearly and to express your ideas in a well developed manner. Support the claims you make with discussion, explanation, elaboration or textual evidence. Your paper should be between 1,000 and 1, 500 words long.
